Why Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a crucial European tie against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight berth.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He worked his way up to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.
"He's a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.
According to international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.
He has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose La Roja, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club pursue trophies to come.
After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
