Three Lions Coach Shares His Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
In the past, the England assistant coach competed in League Two. Currently, he's dedicated supporting the head coach secure World Cup glory next summer. His path from athlete to trainer began with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his purpose.
Metoric Climb
The coach's journey has been remarkable. Beginning with his first major job, he developed a reputation through unique exercises and great man-management. His club career took him to elite sides, plus he took on roles with national teams across multiple countries. He has worked with legends including world-class talents. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the peak according to him.
“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal and then you plan: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a systematic approach that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”
Focus on Minutiae
Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock day and night, they both push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies include psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the national team spirit and avoids language like “international break”.
“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”
Ambitious Trainers
He characterizes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We aim to control each element of play,” he states. “We want to conquer the whole ground and we dedicate long hours toward. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead of changes and to lead and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.
“We have 50 days alongside the squad prior to the World Cup. We need to execute an intricate approach for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from thought to data to knowledge to execution.
“To build a methodology for effective use in that window, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds with them. We have to spend time on the phone with them, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”
World Cup Qualifiers
Barry is preparing for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This period to build on the team's style, for further momentum.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy ought to embody all the positives from the top division,” Barry says. “The physicality, the versatility, the strength, the honesty. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.
“To make it light, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to play freely like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.
“You can gain psychological edges for managers in attack and defense – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared these days. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”
Drive for Growth
His desire to get better is all-consuming. During his education for his pro license, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, as his cohort included stars including former players. So, to build his skill set, he entered the most challenging environments imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he also took inmates in a football drill.
He earned his license as the best in his year, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied numerous set-plays – became a published work. Frank was one of those impressed and he hired Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that Chelsea removed most of his staff except Barry.
The next manager at Chelsea took over, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he got Barry out of Chelsea to work together again. The Football Association view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
