Pat Bamford Signs With Sheffield United Despite Initiating Derogatory Chants Targeting Manager Wilder
Patrick Bamford has signed with Sheffield United only seven months following leading insulting songs directed at the team's coach, Chris Wilder.
The 32-year-old forward, a free agent after departing from Leeds, has put pen to paper on a deal with the Championship club in difficulty through the winter. Bamford's lengthy time at Elland Road was ended by mutual consent this past summer.
Among Bamford’s last memorable actions as a Leeds player was to lead offensive chants regarding Chris Wilder amid Leeds' promotion celebrations this spring. Currently, the former England player will feature for Wilder as the Blades’ manager aims to rescue his beloved club away from the drop zone.
Previous History Between Bamford and the Manager
Both men had history prior to Leeds moved up back to the top flight the previous campaign while Sheffield United were defeated in the playoff final to Sunderland. Wilder called the forward as “a muppet” back when the roles were reversed in 2018-19 and Sheffield United won direct promotion while Leeds United fell short in the playoffs.
Reconciliation & Moving Forward
Everything seems to have been put behind them with Sheffield United, the Championship’s least productive attack, in desperate need of improvement in attack while Bamford aiming to rejuvenate his playing days.
The Wilder chant went viral this spring. An apologetic Patrick and the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, phoned Wilder the following day.
Chris Wilder said at the time: “Had a conversation with Pat yesterday and I have no issue at all with that. I'm uncertain regarding the language from a fellow pro! However I appreciated and admired him giving me a call.
“We spent 20 minutes and the same again I spoke to Daniel Farke as well and we had a longer discussion together and he's a great person, a class act. When I was playing we would dish it out and accept it and that is an integral part of the game at every level, including a Sunday morning. I've got absolutely no issue. I'm fine with the situation and I told him that to Patrick.”
Recent Career Struggles
The forward featured in 18 games with Leeds United in the previous campaign however the former Forest, Chelsea and Boro player has struggled with injury over the past few seasons.
