The Miami Heat put up 86 opening half points against the Grizzlies

The Heat secured a overwhelming 146-114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball game after guard Terry Rozier was detained over alleged illegal gambling.

Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested as part of a broad federal investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.

However, the Heat were not distracted as they put up 86 first-half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year existence.

Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and later said Terry had the team's full backing.

"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is important to everyone. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through the situation."

Portland also won their first game after the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory against the Golden State Warriors.

"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago remarked. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' by Recent Events

Speaking about the arrests for the first time, league head Silver stated he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

The commissioner also mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the betting companies," he added.

"We then looked into that situation and were open regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.

"So, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they announced recently was an indictment.

"Moreover 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Terry.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between upholding rights and investigating."
