RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages down to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," he added. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."
Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
