Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This new chapter signals the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a role you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should get ready for the return of the endearing and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a brief cameo is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the public's reaction. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the offer from the series creator.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the small talk. I remember him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A character that is now represented in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.
"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Excitement Abound
While many longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a strange communal scenario. The chance of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by earlier horror movies, also exists.
Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
