Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Unilever Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced that parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business alongside his partner, announced that he will independently develop the controversial flavor within a personal collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders and Parent Company
This latest announcement intensifies the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the British packaged goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen stated via an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that originally established several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Plans
The founder revealed that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years of involvement, citing worries regarding how its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked how "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence so that the company can achieve the social mission, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
