A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a local firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the character of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Annually, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
